Portfolio Simulator

Run a portfolio through real market history, one decision at a time.

What it is

The simulator drops you into a real stretch of market history with a mandate and a starting balance, and steps you through it. You see prices, news, fundamentals, and your own holdings, you place orders, the clock advances, and you live with what you decided.

The difficulty ladder does something deliberate: a lower level shows fewer panels on the same real market, never a simplified or invented one. Easy starts with a small universe and monthly decisions and no trading costs. Professional runs daily decisions across a large universe with every instrument switched on. Levelling up unlocks instruments on one cockpit rather than switching you to a different game.

Easy starts at $100,000 on purpose: that is exactly the starting balance in the Wharton competition and the Stock Market Game, so a member's first run is denominated in the number they will meet in competition.

Blind runs hide which stretch of history you are in, so you cannot look up what happened next. The clock lives on the server and every order, fill, position, and snapshot is written as you go, which means a reload never costs you a position and a score cannot be farmed by restarting.

What is in it

Four levels on one market

Easy through Professional, rising in starting capital, universe size, and decision frequency, with trading costs, limit orders, shorting, and margin switching on as you climb.

Real market history

Prices, fundamentals, and the news that actually ran, drawn from historical data rather than a random walk, so the lessons transfer.

Blind runs

The era stays hidden while a run is live. You cannot search the outcome, which is the only way a simulated decision measures judgment rather than memory.

Runs that survive a reload

Every step is persisted server-side, so a closed tab, a dead battery, or a switched laptop picks up exactly where you left off.

How to use it

What members who get the most out of this area actually do.

1

Start at Easy even if you have traded before

One year, monthly steps, six companies, no costs. It exists to make the mechanics automatic so that later levels are about judgment.

2

Write the reason before the order

The journal panel is there for a purpose. A thesis written before the outcome is the only one that teaches you anything afterwards.

3

Climb one level at a time

Each level adds instruments and shortens the step. Jumping straight to daily decisions across forty names mostly teaches you that you were overwhelmed.

4

Read the debrief

The debrief opens once the run ends and names the era. That is where a run turns into a lesson rather than a score.
