National Personal Finance Challenge

Budgeting, credit, investing, and risk, tested the way households actually meet them.

What it is

The National Personal Finance Challenge is a team competition run by the Council for Economic Education, and it is about decisions rather than definitions. Earning an income, spending and budgeting, saving and investing, managing credit, managing risk: you are asked what a person in a specific situation should do, and then asked why.

Teams work through online qualifying rounds first, advance to a state round, and the strongest teams reach the national finals, where the format changes shape. There you are given a household's real financial picture, you build a plan for it, and you present and defend that plan in front of judges.

It rewards the same thing every year: teams that can do the arithmetic and then explain the trade-off in plain language.

How MCBA prepares you

Every member gets the prep below inside the Competition Academy, built around this competition rather than adapted from a generic business course.

1

The same domains the challenge tests

The Academy splits personal finance into budgeting and cash flow, credit and debt, saving and investing, and insurance and risk, each with its own study guide and flashcard deck. You revise a domain, not a vague pile.

2

Practice tests that send you back to the source

Every practice question carries its explanation and a link to the guide or deck that covers it, so a wrong answer becomes the next thing you study instead of a number on a scoreboard.

3

Full mock challenges, timed

Exam-style mock rounds that mirror the real qualifier, scored, so you find out where you stand while there is still time to move.

4

Coaching for the case round

The case round playbook plus mentor feedback on how to structure a recommendation, pick the numbers you are willing to defend, and handle a judge who pushes back.
